In 2015, MEIS was asked to conceive of an iconic entertainment venue on the Hudson River in NYC and a second location in Las Vegas, NV. While several forms were considered, the client settled on a 110M diameter Sphere. We chose to raise the Sphere above the pier 20 meters on a tripod of structural steel allowing for the creation of a park that would extend below the venue reaching out into the Hudson River edge.

The venue included a 12,000 seat theater, with large retractable doors allowing for stunning views of the New York City skyline. The top floor of the Sphere housed a VIP club and observatory open to the stars.

CULTURAL IMPACT AND RESONANCE

While not yet realized, the Sphere represents a prime example of how MEIS approaches a project of significant cultural and civic importance. We were asked to create an iconic performance venue that would be recognized throughout the world as THE state-of-art.

Resting on a tripod of steel 30 meters above the Hudson River Pier, the Sphere is envisioned to be a technological marvel. Huge retractable walls will allow the 12,000 seat theater to open to the New York skyline. The skin of the venue incorporates an innovative new projection technology ensuring the building’s iconic status on the Hudson River. A rooftop club and observatory is to become one of New York City’s most popular attractions.
