Morumbi Stadium Renovation Study

The financial and business hub of Brazil, not only is Sao Paulo the biggest city in the country, it also ranks among the most populous in the world with just over 11 million inhabitants. Sao Paulo is the very birthplace of Brazilian football with three of Brazil’s most powerful clubs from the region: old-time rivals Corinthians, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo Football Club.

As a football-crazy metropolis, Sao Paulo’s home ground of Morumbi Stadium is considered an iconic shrine to Brazilian Football history and heritage. The 80,000-seat Morumbi Stadium is the city’s biggest sports facility and was one of the venues of the maiden FIFA Club World Cup.

Given the status of the current venue as a place of great history to Brazilians, it was important to keep the critical elements of the venue the same while adapting the overall vision to address FIFA World Cup requirements. Dan Meis was hired to design various schemes and bring the stadium up to FIFA standards.
